How to Use This Calculator
Our CPAP Power Calculator uses a physics-based model to accurately estimate power consumption based on your device model, pressure settings, and accessories. The calculations are derived from manufacturer specifications, published research, and real-world testing data.
How We Calculate
Power consumption has three main components:
- Blower Motor: Scales non-linearly with pressure (higher pressure requires exponentially more power)
- Humidifier: Adds significant power (typically 12-22W on moderate settings). Research shows humidification increases power consumption by an average of 345%
- Heated Tube: Adds 4-5W to prevent condensation in the breathing circuit
Important Notes
- Calculations assume moderate humidifier settings (level 2-3 of 5). Maximum humidifier levels can double power consumption
- Power consumption varies with pressure: a machine at 20 cmH₂O uses roughly 2-3x more power than at 10 cmH₂O
- Results are estimates and may vary ±20% based on environmental conditions (altitude, temperature, humidity)
- Battery efficiency decreases in cold weather and with battery age
- Recommended: Add 20-30% buffer capacity when selecting a battery for reliable operation
Tip: To maximize battery life while traveling, consider reducing your humidifier level or disabling it entirely. This can reduce power consumption by 40-60%.
